This two-volume set is part of a growing body of literature concerned with the history of biblical interpretation. The ample introduction first situates key players in the story of the development of the major strands of biblical interpretation since the Enlightenment, identifying how different theoretical and methodological approaches are related to each other and describing the academic environment in which they emerged and developed. Volume 1 contains fourteen essays on twenty-two interpreters who were principally active before 1980, and volume 2 has nineteen essays on twenty-seven of those who were active primarily after this date. Each chapter provides a brief biography of one or more scholars, as well as a detailed description of their major contributions to the field. This is followed by an (often new) application of the scholar's theory. By focusing on the individual scholars and their work, the book recognizes that interpretive approaches arise out of certain circumstances, and that scholars are influenced by, and have influences upon, both other interpreters and the times in which they live. This set is ideal for any class on the history of biblical interpretation and for those who want a greater understanding of how the current field of biblical studies developed.

"A pointer to some of the figures influential in recent biblical interpretation that will be particularly helpful to students trying to acquaint themselves with the field."
--L. W. Hurtado, Emeritus Professor of New Testament Language, Literature & Theology, School of Divinity, New College, University of Edinburgh

Exodus: Saved for God's Glory (Preaching the Word | PtW)

At once theologically instructive and decidedly practical, this commentary moves readers to great rejoicing at God’s work in the life of every person following him on the path to spiritual freedom. Ryken skillfully relates how the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery anticipated the salvation accomplished in Jesus Christ, proving that God remembers his covenant and always delivers on his promises. For those who preach, teach, and study God’s Word, this book is more than just a commentary; it is a celebration of God’s faithfulness.

Reading Mark for the First Time

Wilfrid J. Harrington explores his favorite gospel, the Gospel of Mark, with emphasis on why Mark tells the story the way he does. Harrington backs up his appreciation of the literary sophistication by outlining Mark’s technique. He demonstrates Mark’s storytelling and writing ability, and discusses the centrality of the cross to Mark’s account of Jesus. Mark’s theology is a theology of the cross, and his Jesus is the most human out of all the gospels. Harrington admires Mark’s realism, and confirms his conviction that the cross is indeed the heart of Christianity.

New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT) Set: 26 Vols

For the Olive Tree Bible App

Publisher: Eerdmans Publishing Company

Description

New Testament Series Editor: Joel B. Green

"Faithful criticism" characterizes volumes in The New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT), and is widely recognized by pastors, students, and scholars alike for its attention to the text of Scripture, its currency with contemporary scholarship, and its service to the global church.

The interpretive work reflected in these commentaries is based on careful study of the Greek text, but commentary readers need not be practiced in the biblical languages to benefit from them. In the same way, NICNT volumes reflect serious work in technical areas — such as linguistics, textual criticism, and historical concerns — but the commentary itself focuses on understanding the text rather than navigating scholarly debates. Readers can turn to the footnotes and excursuses for more specialized interaction with the Greek text and engagement with critical issues and literature.

Interpreting the Pentateuch: An Exegetical Handbook (Handbooks for Old Testament Exegesis | HOTE)

Interpreting the Pentateuch: An Exegetical Handbook (Handbooks for Old Testament Exegesis | HOTE)

In Interpreting the Pentateuch, Old Testament scholar Peter T. Vogt overviews the major themes of the Pentateuch and offers strategies for interpretation by exploring its genres: law and narrative. Divided into three parts, Interpreting the Pentateuch first provides an overview of the major themes of the Pentateuch. In the second part, Vogt offers resources and strategies for interpreting and understanding the first five books of the Bible by exploring its genres-law and narrative. Finally, Vogt shows that, although the Pentateuch is a collection of ancient texts, it still has contemporary significance. Providing two start-to-finish examples of proper exegesis, he shows that, although the Pentateuch is a collection of ancient texts, it still has contemporary significance.

A Commentary on 1 & 2 Chronicles (Kregel Exegetical Library)

The trauma of the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, the exile of thousands of Judea’s citizens, and the subsequent return after 70 years to the homeland with the difficult task of starting the new covenant community virtually from scratch—all contributed to a reassessment of Israel’s meaning and destiny. The chronicler-theologian thus composed his work not just as a history of his people from their ancient beginnings but as an interpreted history, one designed to offer hope to the beleaguered community as well as to issue warnings that should they fall back into the ways of their fathers they could expect the judgment of God to be repeated.

 Foundations of Systematic Theology

Foundations of Systematic Theology

Foundations of Systematic Theology examines Christian doctrine and argues that a full Christian theology much be fully aware of its own doctrinal tradition, particularly the unity of faith through history, and also of its awareness of hermeneutics and philosophy, especially epistemology. Guarino argues that revelation and faith must not, and indeed cannot, be chained to non-foundationalist metaphysics. Anything less detaches Christianity’s self-understanding from its own true claims.

New American Commentary Old Testament Set (25 Vols.) — NAC

Publisher: Broadman & Holman
New American Commentary<br> Old Testament Set (25 Vols.)
The New American Commentary collects the best in contemporary evangelical scholarship in a series that examines the entire Bible in depth. The New American Commentary – Old Testament Set currently offers 25 volumes of commentary on the Old Testament.

The New American Commentary consistently supports the inerrancy of Scripture and contributing scholars all hold explicit commitments to Scripture’s infallibility. Its distinctive perspective is a focus on the theological ideas springing from Scripture. Along with the textual grounding of an expository commentary, the New American Commentary also focuses on the broader strokes of theology developed by each book, and interprets each book as a theological unity. Rooted in conservative theology, the New American Commentary also directly engages a wide range of theological and exegetical issues raised by contemporary biblical scholarship.

Ecclesiastical History, Books 1–5 (The Fathers of the Church)

Eusebius was commonly known among the ancients as Eusebius of Caesarea or Eusebius Pamphili. The first designation arose from the fact that he was bishop of Caesarea for many years; the second from the fact that he was a close friend and admirer of Pamphilus, a proselyte of Caesarea and a martyr. At least 40 contemporaries bore the same name, among which the most famous were Eusebius of Samosata—and so arose the necessity of distinguishing him from these others by specific designation.

[Logos] Free audio course: Social World of OT (limited time)

Mobile Ed: OT204 The Social World of the Old Testament (4 hour course - audio)

by David W. Baker
Format: Digital
Publisher: Lexham Press, 2016

Overview

In an age of international travel and migration, we’re familiar
with people who look, sound, eat, and believe differently than we do. In
order to become friends, it’s helpful to understand where they come
from and how they do things differently, or the same, as we do. In the
same way it is necessary to understand someone who comes from a
different place than we do, how much more necessary is it to understand
someone who is from not only a different geographical place, but also a
different time than we are? The Old Testament starts at the beginning of
the world. This course will undertake the task of crossing the bridges
of geography, climate, time, and a landscape unknown to us: ancient
Israel. Throughout the course, David W. Baker will address aspects of
life from our own culture and time, as well as family structure and
societal systems from ancient Israelite life. As we learn more about the
social world of the Old Testament, we will be struck not only by our
differences, but also by our common humanity, sharing the same dreams,
hopes, and fears as they did.

Prepositions are important in the exegesis of the Greek New Testament, but they are at the same time very slippery words because they can have so many nuances. While Prepositions and Theology in the Greek New Testament rejects the idea of a “theology of the prepositions,” it is a study of the numerous places in the Greek New Testament where prepositions contribute to the theological meaning of the text.
Offered in the hope that it might encourage close study of the Greek text of the New Testament, its many features include the following:
  • Coverage of all 17 “proper” and 42 “improper” prepositions
  • Explores both literary and broader theological contexts
  • Greek font—not transliteration—used throughout
  • Comprehensive indexes to hundreds of verses, subjects, and Greek words
  • Discussion of key repeated phrases that use a particular preposition

Each chapter is divided into six sections and includes extensive exercises and significant biblical passages for translation.
One of the most helpful and unique features of the workbook remains. You can go through the workbook on one of two tracks: Track One follows the workbook (and textbook) in its regular order, while Track Two is organized so you can learn verbs earlier in the course.
